Vision Therapy

What is Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy is a customized treatment program designed to develop visual skills, increase visual performance and efficiency, and improve how people process or interpret visual information. Vision therapy can help people who suffer from a variety of issues, including the following conditions:

  • Amblyopia (lazy eye)
  • Convergence Insufficiency
  • Strabismus (crossed eyes)
  • Double vision
  • Eye teaming and tracking problems
  • Depth perception difficulties
  • Visual motor disorders
  • Traumatic brain injury

The vision therapy treatment program is comprised of a series of vision procedures performed under doctor supervision conducted in the office, in once or twice weekly sessions of 30 minutes to an hour. Treatment uses several types of specialized medical equipment such as:

  • Therapeutic lenses
  • Prisms
  • Filters
  • Occluders or patches
  • Electronic targets with timing mechanisms
  • Balance boards

Who Benefits from Vision Therapy?

  • School-aged children who do not have the necessary visual skills for reading, writing, and learning and who suffer from learning-related vision problems can benefit from vision therapy customized to their needs. Learning relies so much on the visual system, and if a child has a visual problem, it can affect their performance in school and their overall experience. Signs a child may have a visual problem include losing their place while reading, reading below grade level, spelling difficulties, reversing letters, avoiding doing homework, difficulty maintaining attention, poor depth perception, and messy handwriting.
  • People of all ages who have strabismus (crossed eyes) and amblyopia (lazy eye) can benefit from vision therapy.
  • People who have suffered a traumatic brain injury, such as a concussion, and are suffering from vision problems as a result can benefit from vision therapy. Signs of a vision problem after suffering a traumatic brain injury can include double vision, blurry vision, difficulty concentrating, new reading difficulties, and developing headaches while reading.

Get Started with Vision Therapy

The first step in any eye vision therapy program is a comprehensive eye exam so that the doctors at Decatur Family Eye Care can get a better understanding of the current state of vision and eye health. Following this thorough evaluation, the doctors at Decatur Family Eye Care can advise you as to whether you or your child are a good candidate for optometric vision therapy and guide you through the program.
